Richie Kotzen's Guitar Solo in "My Angel"

There's no need for flashy licks in your solo when you can simply play a melody as compelling as the chorus in "My Angel". That's what Richie does with finesse in this outro. The challenge in this solo is replicating the subtle nuances of his phrasing such as his vibrato, slides, and ability to play behind and in front of the beat at certain moments. Paul Gilbert's Guitar Solo in "Nobody Left to Blame"

Here's my transcription of Paul's solo from "Nobody Left To Blame" off of Mr. Big's record "What If..." (2010). Some of my favourite licks here include Paul's blues bends spiced up with the natural 13th in bars 2 and 9, his deft tapping passage in bars 7-8, and his terrifying triplet pentatonic run in bars 13-14. Note the two key changes in the solo and how Paul navigates them by simply transposing his pentatonic licks accordingly. Hope you enjoy the tab! Richie Kotzen's Guitar Solo in "Don't Ask"

Like his "Get A Life" solo in my last post, Richie's solo in "Don't Ask" starts off slow but ends with a blazing 16th note triplet lick. Notice how Richie performs a particular move twice in this lick (bar 8): he descends on a few notes and then jumps up a fourth to a higher adjacent string, only to resume descending again. Richie Kotzen's Guitar Solo in "Get A Life"

Here's another solo from one of my favorite Kotzen albums, "Change" (2003). The solo is only 8 bars long and starts off without any of Richie's usual fireworks, but it's a simply a lesson on restraint. Richie pulls off some fast 16th note triplet licks towards the end at bars 5 and 6 using some handy scale shapes and horizontal shifts before peaking at the 21st fret. Hope you enjoy the tab! Richie Kotzen's Guitar Solo in "High"

This is quite easily one of Kotzen's best songs from his hook laden album Change (2003) and features a short and sweet solo. Richie keeps it simple by mostly using the pentatonic scale but his lines are melodic and his behind the beat phrasing is difficult to reproduce. Dig his cool chromatic climb to the V chord in bar 9 and his juicy bends in bar 10. Hope you enjoy the tab!
