Steve Lukather's "Rest of the World"

Tasty blues licks abound in this soulful ballad written by Jack Raines and CJ Vanston from Steve Lukather's latest record, "Transition". You'll find plenty of bends that target both the major and minor 3rd over G major, subtle vibrato involving the tremolo bar ala Jeff Beck, and slippery slides that all contribute to the vocal quality of Luke's playing. It's a true lesson in restraint and sophistication to hear Lukather play these licks in the spaces between his vocals. Some of my favourite moments include the well placed "Little Wing" inspired double stops in the chorus and the triad based lick in bar 59. But all these licks aside, it's simply a great song.
